The Ridiculous Six
The “now trending” column on Facebook is largely unnecessary, because it’s not so much what people are actually interested in and more whatever draws attention to who’s giving FB money.
But I digress – what I really wanted to talk about is the news story about the dozen Native actors who walked off of the set of Adam Sandler’s newest film, The Ridiculous Six. The actors, including the film’s cultural advisor, left the set after protesting the lack of respect for women, elders, and Native culture. Upon voicing their displeasure, they were told that if they were going to be so sensitive, they should leave.
Not that anyone’s asking for my support, but I side with the Native people on this. Racism isn’t funny. But what I find funny (in a sarcastic, not amusing way at all) is this:
The first article is from Indian Country Today Media Network and the second’s from Yahoo. Notice that for Yahoo, despite the fact that neither Adam Sandler nor Happy Madison Productions has addressed the walk out publically, Adam Sandler is pictured. Every article that I have found, with the exception of the Indian Country Today Media Network, has a picture of Adam Sandler. So what gets the focus? Adam Sandler. Not for being racist, but for his controversial comedy.
Right about now is when I wish I had a gif of Don Lockwood, nodding solemnly and saying, “Irony. Always irony.”
